Green Dictionary
What exactly does green mean? Does it mean the same thing to everyone? Do people have their own definition of green, including necessary evils they’ll tolerate when a company also uses good ethical and environmental practices? How do consumers decide what’s green and what isn’t?
Unlike organic certification, there isn’t a U.S. government agency that defines or regulates use of the word “green” in labeling or marketing. Nonprofit organizations such as Green America, TransFair USA and Green Seal certify products and businesses that meet their criteria. Otherwise, it falls to consumers to make informed decisions in a marketplace crowded with honest businesses and also those seeking to prove P.T. Barnum’s attitude about the birthrate of suckers.
