The Denver International Airport may be the largest international airport in the United States, but it is also a truly spectacular architectural work of art. The building was designed by Perez Architects and Fentress Bradburn, and it was completed in 1995. A series of cables, similar to the Brooklyn Bridge, supports the roof and the main building. It was designed to be reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains with tent-like fiberglass structures.

Denver’s East High School was built in 1875, the first high school in Denver. It moved to its current location in 1925 and the new building was modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The giant clock tower watches over East Colfax, and it is truly a sight to see. Denver native George Hebard Willimason designed the building years after graduating from the old East High School in 1893.

A landmark in Denver, the historic Brown Palace lives on as the picture of luxury and elegance. Designed by Frank E. Edbrook, it was opened in 1892 in the Italian Renaissance style. Colorado red granite and Arizona sandstone were used in the construction of the exterior of the building. James Whitehouse was hired to create 26 medallions to decorate the building. They were carved out of stone to depict native Colorado animals, and these medallions still hang today between the seventh-floor windows on the exterior of the building. Public tours are complimentary to all hotel guests, or $10 per person.

Just a short drive west on I-70 you’ll see the house that every Colorado native knows about. Some call it the Jetsons House, or the Flying Saucer House, but most refer to it as the Sleeper House because it was used as the iconic house in the 1973 Woody Allen comedy “Sleeper.” Built in 1963, the house has a distinct modern design created by architect Charles Deaton. Deaton himself has been quotes as describing the house on Genessee Mountain. The home is now privately owned, but take a drive down I-70 and you are sure to see it.

Durant Scores 51 As Thunder Top Nuggets 124-118

CBS Denver - February 19, 2012 - 9:25pm

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kevin Durant scored a career-best 51 points for the top performance in the NBA this season, Russell Westbrook added 40 and Serge Ibaka had his first career triple-double as the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Denver Nuggets 124-118 in overtime Sunday night.

Durant hit a 3-pointer and drove for a dunk to tie the game with 4.4 seconds left in regulation, then used the extra period to chalk up the first 50-point game of the two-time scoring champion’s career.

He walked slowly over to his mother, seated courtside, and gave her a kiss and a hug when the final horn sounded.

Ibaka added 14 points, 15 rebounds and 11 blocks to become the 14th player in franchise history with a triple-double.

Arron Afflalo scored 27 points and Andre Miller had 21 points and 10 assists for Denver, which had a shot to win at the end of regulation.

Ty Lawson, who missed a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left, also couldn’t connect on an off-balance jumper from the foul line at the buzzer after pump-faking Westbrook into the air.

Westbrook hit a 3 on Oklahoma City’s opening possession of overtime, and the Nuggets committed five turnovers to squander their chances in the extra period.

Fans in the sellout crowd chanted “MVP!” as Durant hit two free throws in the final seconds to surpass 50 points for the first time in his career and put the finishing touches on Oklahoma City’s ninth straight win at home.

Reserve Rudy Fernandez (lower back strain) joined starters Danilo Gallinari (ankle) and Nene (calf) on the Nuggets’ injury list, and coach George Karl went with his 13th different lineup of the season in 32 games. Denver lost for the eighth time in its last 10 games. The last two have been particularly wrenching, by one point at Memphis and then an overtime thriller at Oklahoma City.

It was a wildly back-and-forth game from the start, with big swings in either direction.

The Nuggets took an early lead before allowing a 16-2 Oklahoma City run that featured a pair of 3-pointers from Durant and Westbrook’s driving dunk. Afflalo then had two jumpers and a finger roll in transition as Denver scored the final 10 points to lead 27-25.

That was only the start of the Nuggets’ big run, though.

Reserve Kosta Koufos, forced into action after Al Harrington picked up three fouls, had a three-point play and two layups set up by Andre Miller while Denver outscored the Thunder 29-7 in a span of about 7 1/2 minutes. Chris Andersen’s fast-break layup made it 46-32 with 6:29 left before halftime — Oklahoma City’s largest deficit at Chesapeake Energy Arena this season.

It still didn’t take the Thunder long to wipe it away.

Durant and Westbrook scored the next six points, and Oklahoma City went on a 20-0 run spanning halftime to get back ahead. James Harden’s 3-pointer got the lead down to 58-53 by halftime, and Westbrook scored the first three baskets of the second half to put the Thunder ahead.

Durant added a two-handed slam off Westbrook’s alley-oop and a right-handed fast-break jam in a span of three possessions, and Oklahoma City led 65-58 with 6:04 left in the third.

Then it was Denver’s turn again, rallying back to take a brief lead on Miller’s layup with under 2 minutes left in the third. The Nuggets kept it going into the fourth, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Harrington just after Durant and Westbrook re-entered for a 93-84 advantage with 8:50 to play.

Oklahoma City whittled away at the deficit, finally pulling even at 102 when Westbrook connected on a jumper from the foul line with 2:52 to play. Ibaka swatted Lawson’s shot 20 seconds later for his 10th block in regulation.

Lawson hit a 3-pointer and Harrington two free throws for a 111-106 Denver lead with 43 seconds left, but Durant hit a second-chance 3-pointer from the top of the key and a driving dunk with 4.4 seconds left to tie it.

Notes: Thunder reserve Lazar Hayward was out with a fractured left orbital floor after being poked in the eye late in Oklahoma City’s win against Golden State on Friday. … The Nuggets (103.4) and Thunder (101.6) are two of three teams averaging more than 100 points per game, trailing only Miami (103.7) in the NBA rankings. … Lenny Wilkens, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp and Jack Sikma are among the 12 players with triple-doubles for the Seattle SuperSonics. Westbrook is the only one other than Ibaka to do it with the Thunder.

Falcons Shock San Diego State

CBS Denver - February 18, 2012 - 7:25pm

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) — While Air Force was wildly celebrating its first win over a top-20 team in 65 tries, San Diego State was left to wonder how things have gone so bad so fast.

The 13th-ranked Aztecs lost another game and another front-line player Saturday, when they were beaten 58-56 by a Falcons team that’s been through a lot of turmoil and a coaching change this month.

Two weeks ago, the Aztecs were sitting pretty at 20-3 and were atop the Mountain West Conference. Now, they’ve dropped three straight for the first time in four years and they’ve fallen two games behind conference leader New Mexico.

In many ways, this loss was worse than their close call at UNLV, a 65-63 defeat, and a 77-67 loss to the surging Lobos at home on Wednesday night.

The Aztecs (20-6, 6-4) hadn’t lost to the Falcons in eight tries.

“I think we have to make sure that we remain determined and believing in ourselves,” coach Steve Fisher said. “I think when you lose a game and then lose another game, you start to wonder. And then you lose a third game that everybody says you’re supposed to win, it can wear on you.

“And the only way to get that hook out of your mouth, to spit it out, is to work up a sweat in practice, shoot and shoot and shoot, come out and find a way to get a win in the next one, and that’s what we have to find a way to do.”

That, they will, pledged Xavier Thames, whose off-balance 3-pointer missed the rim at the buzzer, sending the Falcons, interim coach Dave Pilipovich and the sparse crowd at Clune Arena into delirium.

“Just get back to having fun like we had in the beginning of the season and get at it and practice hard,” he said. “Those are the two main things: having fun and working hard.”

Like the Falcons did Saturday.

“It would be a great day to retire,” cracked Pilipovich, who might actually have secured his future with the Falcons (13-11, 3-7).

Air Force improved to 2-1 under Pilipovich, 1-64 against top-20 teams and 2-74 against ranked opponents. The only other time the Falcons beat a ranked team was Feb. 15, 1992, against No. 22 UTEP.

“Before the game, we talked about that there’s been only one other Air Force team that’s beaten a ranked team. That was in `92, almost to the day. We put that up on the board before the game and said, `Why not us?”‘ Pilipovich said.

The Aztecs fell two games behind conference leader New Mexico, which beat No. 11 UNLV 65-45 earlier Saturday. This is their first three-game skid since Feb. 9-16, 2008, a span of 143 games.

The Aztecs got 17 points from Chase Tapley and 13 points and 11 rebounds from Tim Shelton, but they sorely missed Jamaal Franklin, their leading scorer (16.0) and rebounder (7.4), who sprained his left ankle in the closing minutes of a loss to New Mexico on Wednesday night and sat out Saturday.

Another San Diego State starter went down Saturday when 6-foot-11 forward Garrett Green turned his right ankle 8 minutes into the second half. He took a seat after scoring five points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

“It would help to have those guys,” Thames said, “but we can’t make excuses.”

“We had all sorts of looks,” Fisher concurred. “You’ve got to be able to find a way to make them. You’ve got to make a few more than we made — or a lot more than we made.”

During one stretch in the second half, the Aztecs missed 13 straight shots and went 11 1/2 minutes without a field goal, allowing the Falcons to hang around for a shot at the upset.

Behind Lyons, who hit two 3-pointers and make a crucial steal during a 10-0 run, the Falcons built a 56-48 lead with 2 1/2 minutes left only to watch the Aztecs whittle away.

With Air Force clinging to a one-point lead, Todd Fletcher was fouled with 8.2 seconds left. He made the first free throws but missed the second and Shelton grabbed the rebound.

Thames wanted to drive to the basket to send the game into overtime, but “I got it kind of late,” he said. “I was going to drive, but there was 2 seconds on the clock, so I just had to force up a shot.”

It wasn’t even close, just like so many other attempts by the Aztecs, who shot 29 percent in the second half.

“It’s hard to win anywhere, especially hard to win on the road,” Fisher said. “And it’s especially hard when you shoot it as poorly as we did.”

Franklin tested his ankle during warm-ups but didn’t even try to talk his way into the lineup. Fisher said he had no update on Green but hoped to have him back against Wyoming on Wednesday night.

Buffs Hold On To Sweep Utes

CBS Denver - February 18, 2012 - 7:15pm

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Colorado players figured they’d get more of a fight from Utah on Saturday than they did in a 73-33 New Year’s Eve blowout in the Pac-12 Conference debut for both teams.

And they did, with the Utes rallying from a nine-point deficit to tie the game with 4:23 remaining.

But the Buffaloes managed to hang on and execute down the stretch, staying alive in the conference race with a 55-48 win.

“I was proud of our guys,” Colorado coach Tad Boyle said. “The last four minutes they buckled down and did what they had to do. (Utah) made a run at us and our guys handled it. To not play your best and win a game is a sign of progress.”

Sophomore forward Andre Roberson continued to be a bright spot for Colorado (17-8, 9-4). He had 12 points and 15 rebounds, vaulting him to No. 9 on the Buffs’ all-time single-season rebounding list.

Austin Dufault added 11 points, and Askia Booker contributed eight off the bench.

It was a different story for Colorado guard Carlon Brown, who suffered through a miserable shooting performance. He was 2 for 12 (1 of 5 from 3-point range) and finished with five points in his return to Salt Lake City, where he played three seasons for Utah.

Brown insisted the Utes were just another team and that he wasn’t going to get caught up in emotions.

But after getting booed during pregame introductions and each time he touched the ball early, he seemed out of sorts. He missed his first seven shots, including three from beyond the arc, and had one blocked.

He wasn’t the only one struggling early. Utah and Colorado were a combined 0 of 11 to start the game, and the Buffaloes were shooting just 29.6 percent at halftime.

Boyle said the difference was rebounding, as the Buffs held a 24-13 edge on the boards at the break.

“Our program is predicated on defense and rebounding,” Boyle said. “We didn’t let our frustrations on offense affect our defense and that’s a sign of progress.”

Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak also saw progress, though the loss was Utah’s seventh straight. Saturday the Utes lost by seven. Seven weeks ago they lost by 40.

“We put ourselves in position and battled back,” said Krystkowiak, in his first year at Utah. “I am super proud of the team. There is no quit in them. They are continuing to get better and fighting. That means a lot to this university and our staff.”

Jason Washburn led Utah (5-20, 2-11) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Hines added 12 points on four 3-pointers.

The Utes trailed by as many as nine points in the second half, but tied the score at 44 with 4:23 remaining. Colorado then went on a 6-0 run, Dufault got a late block and the Buffs sank key free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Colorado led 22-19 at the break, then outscored Utah 11-5 to open the second half to take a 33-24 lead. Brown’s steal and fast-break layup capped the run.

Anthony Odunsi’s running jumper and a layup by Washburn pulled Utah within 35-30, Hines’ 3-pointer cut the gap to 38-35, and Cedric Martin pulled the Utes within 2 with Utah’s sixth 3-pointer.

Odunsi then tied it at 40 with 6:25 remaining.

With the score tied at 44, Spencer Dinwiddie and Roberson hit field goals for Colorado and Nate Tomlinson added a pair of free throws.

Utah got no closer than four the rest of the way.

“We are proud of our team’s effort, but at the end of the day, that doesn’t fix the feeling of losing,” Washburn said.

For Boyle, there was simply relief.

“You look around the country now and you look at conference games … you see a lot of teams that might struggle on the road to win a close game,” he said. “It happens in our league, it happens in every league and this was just one of those games.”

Luckily, Roberson was playing the way he did against Utah in the first game when he had 17 points and 17 rebounds.

The dynamic sophomore now needs to average just under 9 rebounds over CU’s final four regular-season games to break Burdette Haldorson’s 57-year-old record of 346 set during the 1954-55 season.

NOTES: The 1976-77 Utah men’s basketball team, which went 22-7 overall and captured the Western Athletic Conference championship, was honored at halftime.

It was untouched, picturesque snow just out of bounds at Blue Sky Basin on the backside of Vail Mountain that lured Skye and Arnold.

“We decided to take a detour,” Skye said.

They were skiing in Blue Sky Basin on Skye’s birthday. They unknowingly skied into the backcountry beyond thinking downhill slopes would take them back to the ski area. But they didn’t.

When Skye and Arnold reached the bottom of the valley, they realized they weren’t where they wanted to be.

“We started getting a little worried,” Arnold said.

In the right place at the right time was Csincsak, who was snowmobiling with about a half dozen other people. He explained to the mother and son what they had traversed into.

“They legitimately thought there was a chairlift nearby,” Csincsak said.

It wasn’t Csincsak’s first rescue. He rescued another snowboarder in the exact area more than a year ago. He too had mistakenly taken a wrong turn.

Csincsak gave them rides for awhile and then helped tow them back to the ski area.

“They definitely were not out of their ability level. They just dropped into a zone they didn’t realize how dangerous it really was,” Csincsak said.

Had Csincsak not been there and had they gone in the direction they thought would lead them back to the ski area, the ending to the story may have been tragic.

Bill Would Legalize Use Of Gold & Silver Coins As Currency

CBS Denver - February 18, 2012 - 5:25pm

DENVER (CBS4) – Some Colorado lawmakers want people to be able to use gold and silver coins as currency.

A bill before the state Senate would legalize the coins. Utah already has a similar measure in place and 12 other states are considering such plans.

Supporters are concerned about the strength of the U.S. dollar. The sponsors say a debt crisis and more money being printed can lead to the dollar’s decline. They cite other countries, such as Zimbabwe, who has a $100 trillion bill worth about 40 cents in the U.S. They say using gold and silver can help ease some fears.

“Over history just about every country in the world that has had a serious debt crisis has intentionally inflated their currency,” said Sen. Kent Lambert, R-El Paso County.

Lambert says that can easily happen in this country, so he’s sponsoring a bill that would allow people to use gold and silver coins like cash.

“Coins that are minted by the U.S. government should be something that we can use in trade,” he said.

Gold and silver have been traded for 5,000 years, but after World War I they were banned as currency in the U.S.

Gold dealer Charlie Rockney says he sees more and more people acquiring precious metals as investments in case the value of the U.S. dollar falls.

“The value of their currency has dropped so much. It can happen here. That’s why they’re looking at gold and silver that will hold its value. It’s always been traded,” Rockney said.

To use gold and silver coins today they have to be converted to paper dollars. So a $20 gold coin in the 1800s is still legally worth $20, even though its real value may be a lot more.

On Friday gold was trading at more than $1,700 an ounce.

Lambert admits if the bill passes people won’t be walking around with bags of gold coins, but it’s an alternative for them to feel more secure with their money.

The bill has already cleared the Senate Finance Committee and needs a vote from the full chamber.

Douglas Bruce Goes On Liquid Diet While In Jail

CBS Denver - February 18, 2012 - 5:00pm

DENVER (CBS4) – Colorado’s best known anti-tax crusader is now one of the Denver city jail’s newest inmates. Douglas Bruce turned himself in Friday to begin a 180 day sentence for tax evasion.

Bruce has likened himself to a political prisoner, referring to the late Indian leader Mahatama Ghandi, even going on a fast like him. 4 On Your Side Investigator Rick Sallinger spoke with Bruce over a monitor from behind bars.

“I’m in isolation. I’m not with other inmates. I’m in the maximum security section, according to one deputy, along with the worst part of the population,” Bruce told Sallinger.

Bruce told Sallinger he has requested to be put on a liquid diet. Sallinger asked Bruce if it was a form of protest.

“You can characterize things any way you want. I am verbally objecting to being here because I am innocent,” Bruce said.

He was using liquids Monday before sentencing when he rejected Sallinger’s query about his prospects.

“Are all your questions going to be of that caliber?” he said. “You are tools of people trying to make it into something it is not,” he told reporters on his way in to turn himself in.

Bruce was convicted on tax charges of misusing a nonprofit organization he created.

Sallinger asked Bruce if he was concerned about his personal safety while in jail.

“Are you going to be there with me in jail?” he asked Sallinger

“No, I hope not,” Sallinger replied.

“Then I’m not concerned,” Bruce said.

His last moments of freedom came as he entered the courtroom, surrendered, and was placed in handcuffs while betting on an appeal.

“They want to put me in jail for as long as they possibly can, credibly,  before the case is dismissed,” he said.

When Bruce gets out he will have to serve 6 years probation with all his financial dealings under scrutiny of the court.

High Productivity Farms may be Greener than Organic

feedburner global news - February 18, 2012 - 6:38am
While organic farms are great, new research finds that farms that aim for high food production using environmentally-friendly practices could be better for the environment than both organic and conventional farms. A new study, led by Oxford University scientists, compared the environmental impact of different farming systems. They found that 'integrated' farms that maximized crop yields while using environmentally-friendly techniques – such as crop rotation, organic fertilisers, over winter cover crops, and minimal use of pesticides – would use less energy and generate lower greenhouse gas emissions per unit of production than both organic and conventional farms.

Bicycle Benefits Program Rewards Pedal-Powered Customers

My three-year old daughter is one of the newest participants in Bicycle Benefits, a national program that rewards people for biking to participating businesses. Bikers pay $5 for a sticker that adheres to their helmet, which they present at participating businesses for a discount that is determined by each business. My daughter can now save 5 percent on her grocery bill from our coop grocery store or $.50 on a cup of coffee from the cafe down the street (if she wants to skip her nap). It’s a fabulous initiative that encourages the business community to support pedal power, while promoting sustainable transportation and safe practices (wearing a bike helmet).

Mortality Rates Are Underestimated

feedburner global news - February 17, 2012 - 6:53am
Despite great medical advances that have lengthened human life spans, your chances of living a very long life may be lower than you'd hoped. That's the conclusion of a study by two longevity experts who reviewed the standard models that predict mortality rates and turned up a major error. Instead of confirming that death rates drop once people reach their 80s or 90s – as experts have assumed for many decades -- results showed that the risk of dying continues to increase each year, no matter how old people are.

Science Spending

Science has changed the world. It has created new products and ease of service. What the future will bring is, of course, always uncertain. "It’s not every day you have robots running through your house," Barack Obama quipped last week at the White House science fair, a showcase for student exhibitors that also gave the US president a chance to reiterate a favourite theme. Science and technology, he said, "is what’s going to make a difference in this country, over the long haul".
